When I painted this it had been a tough year for Cumbria after Foot and Mouth disease. So for me the lights are symbolic of hope in the darkness, as well as looking very pretty

These people were swimming in Wastwater after a boiling hot day. The water would still have been icy cold, and also the lake bed shelves suddenly and becomes very deep. To me my painting suggests our vulnerability to nature
